About the association
The Allen County Fire Chiefs Association is made up of all the fire departments and other emergency management agencies within the boarders of Allen County Indiana. The goal of the association is to provide a framework of cooperation and teamwork between all the departments. Typically, each department is represented within the association by their Chief and Assistant Chief. An example of the type of issues the association deals with are mutual aid agreements, county wide S.O.P's and S.O.G's, radio terminology and communications standards.
There are 17 individual fire departments in Allen County with a total of 40 fire stations. These departments range from the all paid Fort Wayne Fire Department to all volunteer departments like Arcola and Monroeville. Fort Wayne is the only department in Allen County that does not rely in some way on volunteers. Many departments are combination, meaning they have both full time, part time and volunteer members. Southwest Allen County Fire District, Huntertown, New Haven/Adams are some examples of combination departments.
There are over 446 firefighters within Allen County, as well as 181 EMT's and 24 Paramedics. Of thoughts members, over 22 are full time, 70 are part time and 391 are volunteers. These brave men and woman cover over 660 square miles of territory and protect 342,168 people, as of the 2000 census. There are 20 Townships in Allen County with most having their own fire department. Thoughts that do not, contract with neighboring departments for coverage.
